In 1935, Don Hinkebein opened a small heating and air conditioning business on the corner of Shelby St. and Broadway in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. With the help of his sons the business grew. In 1969, Don Hinkebein Jr. incorporated The DFH Company.

Today the company still has strong family roots with Don's two sons Chris and Alex assisting in continuing the business.
